Sri Lanka: An Island Nation of Spectacular Scenery and Style

Since Sri Lanka has grown so much in popularity this year, we couldn’t avoid taking a trip there to see what the buzz was about for ourselves, so we ventured to the island after a week split between the Maldives and Dubai.

We found Sri Lanka to be much more manicured and contemporary than we had anticipated. We arrived in Colombo, where lush fields of tea, spices and herbs tantalize the senses. Aman has a very charming property in the town of Galle en route to the coast. It’s a wonderful place to stay overnight before heading to the beach, or for a couple of days to explore the modern life of this Sri Lankan city. At the very least, we suggest stopping here for lunch on the long car journey to the coast to stretch your legs and acclimate your taste buds to the spice-rich cuisine. Built in the 1860s near the site of a 400-year-old government-protected fort, Amangalla’s halls are as historically rich as they are enchanting.

Venture to the coast and you’ll find Amanwella, a beachfront retreat with spectacular scenery that is sure to please the most discerning “Aman-addicts.” We spent a few days on the property, rejuvenating before the long journey home. The villas are typical Aman style, with exceptional oceans views and superior, discreet service. The cuisine features native ingredients while the chef is accommodating to your preferences. Our favorite aspect of the property is the expansive pool overlooking the vast golden-sand beach, and this year will complete an ongoing project of a much-needed spa.

You truly feel like you are at the center of the universe in this tranquil cove, which claims nearly thirty-seven acres of coastal property. The simple, serene design was inspired by Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, renowned for his noncomplex modern approach. Each of Amanwella’s ocean-front suites opens directly to the beach, so that nothing stands between you and the peaceful surf of the Indian Ocean.
